How to Prepare for Your Couples or Family Photoshoot

Planning a photoshoot can be exciting, but it can also feel a little overwhelming—especially if you’re bringing kids or hoping for the perfect couples’ shot. Don’t worry! With a little prep, we can make sure your session goes smoothly and is full of fun, candid moments that capture your unique connection.

In this post, I’ll walk you through the steps to make the most out of your couples or family photoshoot.

1. Choose Outfits That Reflect Your Style and Complement Each Other

One of the first things you might wonder about is what to wear. Outfits play a huge role in how your photos will look and feel, so choose clothes that reflect your personality and style. Here are some tips for picking the perfect outfits:

  • Coordinate, Don’t Match: Instead of everyone wearing the same color, try a palette of colors that go well together (think neutrals with a few pops of color, or soft tones with a standout accent).

  • Keep It Comfortable: Choose clothes that you feel great in and can move around comfortably in, especially if we’ll be outdoors. For kids, bring a backup outfit just in case.

  • Avoid Busy Patterns: Solids and subtle textures work best for family or couples photos. Busy patterns can sometimes be distracting.

  • Add a Personal Touch: Think about small touches, like a favorite accessory, scarf, or hat, to add personality to the look.

2. Pack the Essentials

It’s always a good idea to have a small bag of essentials on hand, especially if you have little ones with you. Here’s what I recommend packing:

  • Snacks and Water: Quick snacks can be a lifesaver, especially for kids! Choose non-messy options like crackers, granola bars, or fruit.

  • Small Toys or Treats: If you have young children, bring something small to grab their attention or make them smile.

  • Touch-Up Items: Consider packing a small brush, makeup touch-up items, and extra hair ties.

  • Blanket or Seating Options: If you’ll be sitting on the ground, a blanket that matches your color scheme can be a cozy, practical addition.

3. Arrive a Little Early

Give yourself some extra time to arrive, especially if you have kids or need to get to a new location. Arriving a few minutes early allows everyone to relax, get comfortable, and shake off any jitters before we start shooting.

4. Bring Some Inspo but Be Open to Spontaneity

If there are specific shots or poses you have in mind, feel free to share them with me beforehand! I love working with clients to capture their vision. That said, some of the best shots come from unplanned moments—like a spontaneous laugh or a sweet glance. Don’t worry too much about perfect poses; my goal is to capture you naturally and authentically.

5. Trust Your Photographer and Enjoy the Moment

You’re in good hands! My role is to guide you through poses, make you feel comfortable, and capture all the little details. Focus on each other, laugh, and enjoy the experience. I’ll handle the rest, making sure we get beautiful, meaningful photos.

6. Kids? Keep It Light and Fun!

If you’re bringing little ones, let’s keep things playful! Here are a few ways to make the session enjoyable for everyone:

  • Let Them Be Themselves: Kids have unique personalities, so let them express themselves. I’ll work around them and capture their natural energy and smiles.

  • Bring Their Favorites: A beloved toy or a favorite game can help them feel at ease. I’m happy to incorporate little toys or activities to keep them happy.

  • Expect a Few Breaks: If they get restless, it’s perfectly fine to take a quick break. This allows them to recharge and helps us avoid any meltdowns.

7. Focus on Each Other

Finally, remember that this session is about you and your loved ones. If it’s a couples shoot, focus on each other and enjoy the chance to celebrate your bond. For families, try to be in the moment with your kids, even if they get a little silly. The best photos come from relaxed, natural interactions.

Preparing for a photoshoot doesn’t have to be stressful! With a little planning, your session will be fun, relaxed, and full of moments that genuinely reflect your relationship or family. Just remember to be yourselves and enjoy the experience—I’ll be there to capture all the love, laughter, and beautiful moments in between.
